The Thong brothers, Shaun and Jasper, in the Phoenix touring cars competing under Audi Hong Kong’s entry had previously been among the main performers in Saturday’s competition. At the beginning of race five of the season, the two were in close pursuit of front runner Lai Wee Sing. Jasper Thong, though, was forced to head for the pit lane on lap six, but at least managed to finish in a good 4th place. Now it was his older brother Shaun’s turn to put pressure on Lai Wee Sing. And he did so with a vengeance – until the two opponents went off track on the last lap. But while Lai Wee Sing still managed to cross the finish line in second place, Shaun Thong was left stranded in the gravel and, with a one-lap deficit, classified only in position ten.
In Sunday’s race, the campaigners had to compete on a wet track. Jasper Thong managed a good start and even took the lead, but the difficult conditions took their toll on him as the race went on. After 14 laps, the debut winner of the event held three weeks ago saw the checkered flag in position eight. Shaun Thong had fewer problems coping with the wet track. He advanced from fifth to third place and still attempted to attack the leading duo, but the checkered flag preempted him.
The next race weekend of the TCR Asia Series will be at the Bangsaen Grand Prix in Thailand on the first weekend in July.
