At half of the twelve races this season, held in four countries, Lee and Thong celebrated on podium, twice as overall winners. Up until the end, the Phoenix Racing duo that competed in the Audi R8 LMS under Audi Hong Kong’s entry still had chances of winning the title in the overall classification. But after position four in the opening race of the wet final weekend, a collision shattered their dreams. More than a sixth place in the final race was the best they could subsequently do – not enough for the really big triumph. With a very small deficit of three points to the new champion, Hunter Abbott (Mercedes), the Silver Cup winners, Lee/Thong, took third place in the overall classification.
Alex Yoong and Alex Au in the Phoenix Racing sister car finished the season in position nine overall. In the Pro-Am classification, in which the pairing recorded two class victories, they even achieved second place.
Ernst Moser, Team Director of Phoenix Racing, made
a positive assessment: “In the inaugural season of the new series, we battled
for the title in the overall classification up until the end. This is a
respectable beginning. Unfortunately – not least due to the extremely difficult
weather conditions on the final weekend – it didn’t pan out completely.
However, a third place overall, the title win in the Silver Cup and the second
place in the Pro-Am classification are very good results and strong motivation
with a view toward 2018 when we’re going to intensify our commitment in GT
racing by participating in the GT4 European Series.”
